F Locrian

F · G♭ · A♭ · B♭ · C♭ · D♭ · E♭
With both a flattened second and a flattened fifth, F Locrian is the darkest of the seven major-scale modes and the only one whose tonic chord is diminished. That lack of a stable fifth makes it hard to write in, so it mostly appears over half-diminished chords in jazz and in short, unsettled passages in metal. A colour more than a key.
