A major scale with a flattened sixth, F♯ Harmonic Major keeps the bright major third and leading tone while darkening the upper register. That single change opens up a family of useful modes and gives major-key writing an unexpected shadow. Increasingly common in modern jazz, and a favourite for reharmonising familiar major progressions.
