E Iwato

E · F · A · B♭ · D
A Japanese pentatonic built from the root, flat second, fourth, flat fifth, and flat seventh, E Iwato is the darkest of the traditional Japanese five-note scales. The diminished fifth makes it genuinely unsettled, and it's a mode of the Hirajoshi scale. Useful where you want an exotic sound with real tension in it.
