Volume, Tone and the Selector Switch

What the knobs on an electric actually do to the signal, and why the switch has five positions.

The controls on an electric guitar are a very small circuit, and there is nothing in it that amplifies. Everything the knobs do, they do by throwing part of the signal away.

The volume control is a potentiometer: a resistive track with a wiper that slides along it. The pickup's signal arrives at one end, the other end goes to ground, and the wiper taps off however much you have dialled in. Turn it down and the rest is shunted to ground and lost.

The tone control is the same component with one part added: a capacitor between the wiper and ground. A capacitor passes high frequencies easily and blocks low ones, so this gives the treble a private route to ground while leaving the bass alone. Roll the tone knob down and you are draining the highs out of your signal. That is the whole mechanism — there is no treble being added anywhere, only highs being removed.

The selector switch picks which pickup, or which combination, is feeding all that. Two-pickup guitars usually get a three-way: neck, both, bridge. The Stratocaster's history here is a good story. It shipped in 1954 with a three-way switch — neck, middle, bridge, and nothing else. Players discovered that if you balanced the lever carefully between two detents, you got two pickups at once and a distinctive hollow, quacky sound. People jammed matchsticks in to hold it there. Fender finally gave in and made the five-way switch standard in 1977, twenty-three years after players had started building it themselves.

The last part of the chain is the output jack, and it is the single most common failure point on an electric guitar. It is a mechanical connection that gets plugged, unplugged and tripped over, and its solder joints work loose. If your guitar crackles or cuts out when you wiggle the cable, that is usually the jack, and it is usually a five-minute repair.

A practical note that sounds like trivia and is not. Potentiometers come in different resistance values, commonly 250k and 500k, and the value affects how much treble leaks to ground even when the knob is up full. Guitars with single coils are usually fitted with 250k pots to tame their brightness; guitars with humbuckers usually get 500k to keep them from sounding dull. Swap a pickup without thinking about the pots and the guitar may not sound the way you expected.
