Three Jobs Every Guitar Does
A guitar looks complicated because it has a lot of pieces with odd names. It gets much simpler once you notice that every guitar ever built — nylon-string, dreadnought, Telecaster, seven-string metal machine — is solving the same three problems.
First, something has to vibrate. That is the strings. A plucked string moves back and forth hundreds of times a second, and that rate of movement is the pitch you hear.
Second, something has to decide which pitch. That is the neck, and specifically the frets: pressing a string against a fret shortens the part that is free to vibrate, and a shorter string vibrates faster and sounds higher.
Third, something has to make it loud enough to hear. A vibrating string on its own is almost silent — it is thin, and it barely disturbs the air around it. This is the only one of the three jobs where an acoustic and an electric genuinely part ways.


Everything else in this path hangs off those three jobs. When you learn what a saddle, a truss rod or a humbucker is for, ask which of the three it serves, and it will stop feeling like trivia.
One more thing worth saying at the start: the guitar is not a finished design. Nearly every part you are about to meet was somebody's fix for a specific problem, usually a fairly recent one. The six-string guitar settled into roughly its modern form only around 1800. The parts that make an electric an electric are younger than recorded jazz.
